(battery is fine and headlamps wont dim wen tryin to start)

no does nothing, engine not turning over just silence, sometimes it will fire up straight away perfect sometimes it will not fire at all others ul turn the key fully silence for around 4-5sec then will turn over and fire up straight away

First thoughts are either a faulty ignition switch or faulty starter motor solenoid. You need to check something to confirm.

If you've got a multimeter you need to see if there is a voltage being applied to the starter motor when you turn the ignition key (let me know if you don't know how to do this - and beware if the car may suddenly start up!). If you have 12v across the motor when the key is turned then almost certainly your starter motor solenoid has worn out - this is a fairly easy fix and should cost no more than £15 in parts and an hours labour and fairly straight forward to do yourself if you're inclined.

If there is no voltage across the starter motor then it is not being 'told' to go. In that case, I would suspect the switches in your ignition barrel. Not quite sure on the price for this but I'm led to believe it's a fairly easy fix - you may even find a good squirt and clean with electrical contact cleaner sorts it out.

Do the voltage check and let us know how you get on - this is really a two man job (one to turn the ignition) unless you've got long leads though...

If it is the solenoid, I've done a write up in the FAQ section all about changing them with the cheapo kit. Bloody easy to do.
