oi oi boys n girls im a little stuck here

ive fitted me fully reconditioned fuel pump and she fires up but a clod of black smoke then dies down then cuts out totally

shes getting enough fuel and ive tested evrything but i cannot find anything untoward with the fuel system at all

but i do have my suspicions with the valve clearances the scenario / conundrum is

i have 3 sets of feeler gauges and only 1 of the sets is imperial and the .10" thou blade when i check it with me digital micrometre caliapers it reads out at .7"thou so ive coupled it with the .2"thou to register it on the caliaper as a full .10 thou but the indications on the gauges indicate at now 12"thou

my question is if the valve / rocker clearance is too great will this cause my problem due to the inlet valve clearances being the only means of regulating the air intake / usage in effect not getting enough air and running too rich causing it to rev up then die as if its flooding itself to death

or is the extra 2 thou clearance nothing to bother about and i have some other problem ive missed :confused::confused:
 
wouldnt expect a 2 thou difference to make it conk out after starting, plus it ran with the other pumps on.
initial thoughts are feed and return arse about face on the new pump.
failing that, crack an injector pipe off, and watch for it not spitting diesel out as its conking out.
presume you've tried it with a bit of throttle on?

tried evry trick in the book and the only thing i can think of is the valve clearances as it seems like its either not gettin enough air or its choking to death :(

im gonna give it a fookin good going through tomorrow if i get chance with all the haloween preperations n **** that goes with having two little girls :faint2:
 
If your valve clearances are a couple of thou too much you might get a tappet rattle. Don't worry about it as it won't affect the starting or running much.
 
Sure you've adjusted the timeing right? Even though it is reconditioned, I wouldn't just go by the marks, but do the usual slack off the pipes and give it a turn job.
 
Try winding the throttle stop in a bit to see iff it keeps going then do as suggested and slacken pipes and adjust timing try clockwise to advance up about 1mm at a time.my pump is about 4mm past the line to run well and yes i have changed timing chain. as for digital calipers dont rely on em for a couple of thou use a micrometer you metric feelers should have a .25mm which is ten thou
 
not getting any chance of even getting near the ****ing landy today as i had my day planned as of yesterday to go out with the kids for a couple of hours this morning and get their haloween costumes come back have a clean up due to the current mess from decorating then get on with the landy after dinner

but nooooo!!!!!

the missus has decided the ceilings wanted another coat of white so when i get home me decks are covered in ****ing paint its white paint slopped on the wall destroying the 2 hours work cutting the top half of it all in me records are now warped as she stood 20 of them on top of the ****ing hot radiator the house is now a total bombsite :mad::mad:

so obviously i went ballistic and shes now ****in run off to her mum n dads out of the way rather than appologise ..........all i wanted to hear was the word sorry !!!!! not well it needed ****ing doing
 
I missed you saying that you has the pump stripped.

I've split mine before and replace the gaskets and seals as they were weeping. It was a right sod to prime again, even using the two bleed holes. In the end I ended up pouring diesel down one of the holes to fill it up.

For me, it was a right pita to bleed. I'd make sure you are definitely getting diesel at the injectors
 
i stripped me old pump ( the one that came with the landy and was overfuelling to fook ) then got one from nrgserv wich just went ape**** for full throttle even with all the cables disconnected return springs still attatched

that pump i part exed with one from landranger 4x4 services in stockport who showed me the receipts for that pump being professionaly refurbished and caliabrated at R Wilkinsons diesel specialists also in stockport and it was for that pump as it had the serial number of the pump on the receipt and price breakdown list

but heres a little update on how its going so far she is a reet twot to get fuel to the injectors speshuly cylinder 3 with constant cranking for about 5-6 minutes till it fires then itll burst into life for a couple of seconds then die out and im back to square 1 again

one thing i have noticed is the angle of the square bit on the side of the pump at the moment is at 6 o clock if you look at it directly from the drivers wing but the original one looked to be between 7 and 8 o clock loking from the same place but me timing marks are all absolutely bang on :confused:
 
i think you have an air issue.
try bleeding again, slacken 3 injector pipes off, and crank till it tries to fire on one cylinder then nip up no.2, no.3 , no,4. (order not specific)
i did have one that were a coont to start, turned out the feed and return was the wrong way round at the tank. had to tow start it for about a mile, and it wouldnt pull under load. diesel restriction tryin to suck up the return pipe.
 
thats what i suspected but thee feed n return pipes are deffo the right way round what if its draggin air in through one of the banjo bolt washers or summot ....would i get the same **** :confused:

soz, bit flippant just puttin a yes, but yes, you would get the symptoms you describe.
are you bleeding it every time before it tries to start?

soon as it fires im back to square 1 startin bleedin it up evry time for about 10 mins :rolleyes::rolleyes:
