Hi, my 1989 90 td has got a problem with te starter motor, click when you try to start it, which is the easiest why of removing it .

Try removin' or just undoin' the exhaust down pipe and/or heat shield and movin' it out of the way first, get a set of sockets with extension bars as it's a PITA to get to, remove the wires from front of starter takin' note of what wires go where, might be easier with another set of hands but can be done alone. It's not too bad a job really, but like ah said it's a PITA! Ye could always try refering to the Haynes manual... Oh, and welcome

This may be completely irrelevant, but should provide some amusement to those with more experience out there.
After I changed my gearbox this summer, I had the same starting problem. It had been on the stands for a few months with a flat battery which was already pretty old. So I replaced the battery - still wouldn't turn. Replaced the starter motor (for which you need the arms of a nimble octopus) - still just clicked. I then did what I should have done in the first place and checked the electrics. It turns out that I had forgotten to bolt the earth strap back on the gearbox. It was just resting against it, so there was enough juice to put light up the electrics, but starter motor couldn't pull any real amps. Oh how we laughed....
Only relevant if you are a numpty seventh dan like me.

I had this after 2 months in the states, took off all earth straps and sanded & filed them clean - turn key vroooom.

I will try the earths first, when I turn the ignition on to No1 possition you can hear a small click in the battery area is there a relay around there or could that be a bad earth its just a bit to cold to be looking yet.
