Hi - just bought another Freelander with the SRS light on. Any advice on how I get it checked to see what is causing it? The vehicle doesn't look bodged about so it could be a failure somewhere. The guy who sold it to me suggested it was the connection under the seat - yeh yeh but it may be.

If you correct the fault will the light go out or does it need some fancy reset tool?

Ha ha no I didn't mean it was the second with an SRS light on - the other one was fine just got rear ended in it and it was a write off do replaced it with another.

I just wondered if the light self cancels if you correct the fault. I ask because I have a spare seat belt stalk and could connect it up to see if it's that bit if the light stays on because it needs a reset then it is a different matter.
 
Can't speak for the Freelander but the common SRS warning light fault is related to a faulty passenger seat sensor (sensor bypass can be bought off ebay for most cars). Unfortunately most cheaper OBD 11 DIY scanner/readers only read engine related faults (diesels 2004 onwards) so you may need to visit your LR dealer or Indie to get the fault codes read.
 
It often is the connection. Haven't checked the FR but on Disco2 there's one under passenger seat and one behind gluv compartment. Big yellow connectors. With ignition OFF, disconnect, wiggle about, reconnect. Will reset itself when you turn ignition on. If not that it will be something more serious I'm afraid, but not sure how you diagnose it. First time I had it I took it to a dealer who said it would need a new steering wheel unit, mega money etc to pass MoT. Needless to say it was actually the connector under the seat.
 
one under the drivers seat too. fault self clears. might be worth just disconnecting and reconnecting each plug. most commonly caused by a seat staying in one place a lot (no problems) then being moved, like say when someone buys another vehicle and has to change the drivers seat position...

Helpful thanks - if it resets itself when corrected I don't mind in plugging etc - I had one on a Seat car where I took off the wheel to change ignition module and stupidly checked to see it worked before wheel was back on - it lit up and then you have to go to a dealer or in my case friendly local garage but still £25 to reset!!!

Ok out with electrical cleaner and torch!

I understand it is not an MOT failure even if it's on but I would like the comfort of knowing it is right.
 
The SRS light was on on my car, 2003 TD4, and it needed reseting by someone with a t4 / testbook, didn't turn off on it's own. As others have said, most common reason is the connection to the seatbelt pre-tensioners. And as has been said, yellow plug under the seat, clean the connection and also bend the tabs a little to help it make a better contact.

Yes I thought that would be the case - I work in a college and they are going to plug me in tomorrow and see if their diagnostic will read and reset anything - worth a go and it's free - it will help teach some lads and lasses about this stuff anyhow.
 
Hi - just had my TD4 hooked up to a diagnostic in the college I work at to check a slight miss and to reset the SRS light - they said they tried a few comms to reset light but couldn't. No engine faults showing. BUT now my time clock doesn't display and my trip meter zeros everytime the ignition is switched on - everything else seems ok ( not sure about engine heater plugs light - will have wait for it to cool down)

Any ideas? I will pop it back tomorrow but a bit freaked by it now!

The airbag module is one a lr proprietary comm so you will probably need a testbook or t4 to connect to it. For example at one garage I took mine too their code reader was showing a faulty abs speed sensor but when plugged in to a proper testbook, the only fault was the airbags!
 
Ok I am a dork! It was just a fuse!!! Seems as though there is a "memory" fuse for click and trip and there is a link to the diagnostic plug - they blew a fuse doing the stuff. Phew cheap fix - all good again - well except for the slight miss!!! Oh yeh and the SRS is still on!
 
Did you clean the connectors under the seat for the seatbelt pretensioners?

Still think the light needs resetting using testbook - I'm pretty sure its a requirement on cars that the SRS light stays on after a fault and only goes off after it's been checked - this is life and death stuff afterall...

On that point, I was 2nd on the scene at an accident recently in the Czech Republic where a guy in a car had run in to the back of a lorry on the motorway, probably only around 15 - 20mph crash speed but made a right mess of the car and it was 'stuck' to the back of the lorry. The driver looked a bit of a state and had some cuts on his face and a broken arm, thankfully nothing more, was just really shocked... anyway, turns out he didn't have his seatbelt on (this is not uncommon in the CZ) and the airbag saved his life probably, or at least from serious injury. I have to admit my sympathy for him really disappeared when I realised!
 
I am still trying to find a reset for the SRS - yes I understand the risk - but it's kind of less than when I ride my motorbikes or my soft top car - BUT I will get it sorted soon - this weekend will be plug fest! I was hoping my mate could test and reset the light as the alternative is either the main stealer or buy a Hawkeye - and that is looking more of an option as I believe it can do the reset and test lots of stuff I will probably need.
