My 1995 Disco has a squealing alternator belt. Just replaced it and it is even worse. Stops for a short while with the application of talcum powder/WD40 but after about 10 miles it is back again. Any ideas?
 
hi pete8905 i had the same problem with my old defender and it was a simplest thing i hadnt got the correct tenshion and the altinator tenshion bolts kept working lose
 
You might have used the wrong belt. Also had loads of problems with 3rd party belts poor quality. Also check out the tensionerbearing goes. Also alternator bearing

If your putting wd40 on the belt and it goes then logic says belt or belt alignment.
 
I cured mine with a new bearing off evil-bay for the tensioner but it would still do it every now and again when it was realy damp!

This post has nuthin to do with the squealin belt... I just wanna say I like the name Jason :D
 
Thanks all for the penny trick idea, have just invested 1p in the prescribed place and all seems well after a 20mile run.
 
Just incase your squeak does come back, I had the same problem ages ago, tried the penny and tensioner bearings and it turned out the belt was the wrong thickness (ply).
 
Also, just to be on the safe side (and also because I learnt this yesterday and want to seem like I know what I;'m talking about :p )

Take the tension of the auxiliary belt and take the belt from around the alternator. Now spin the alternator wheel, should be smooth and silent, if not then you got a problem.

Like I did :(

Mine was making some HORRIBLE noises.

All fixed now though and pick it up tomorrow.. So life is good again

I was up your way yesterday Stretchie. I had to drop a car off over by Wickwar.
 
Wish i'ld known you could get new bearings for them, replaced my alternator belt with a genuine one whilst doing noisy water pump, then 3 weeks later with no indication the tensoner bearing grenaded itself destroying the belt, was going away with work in 2 days time so had to go to the dealer and get ripped of for near £100 for a new tensoner to fix it for the missus before I left. hoping the old one hasent been chucked so I can fix it now for a spare. Funny thing was i checked it when I did the belt and it felt fine, no play no noise, anybody else had one just give up on them with no warning?
 
Yep worked for me too!

Knocked the guy down £100 when I bought it as I thought it would be an expencive fix but seems I just come out £99.98 better off! :) (I droped the first one somewhere!)

I am sure there will be something that pops up later than makes it even tho!

just done mine i changed the whole tensioner as the seal between base and arm had perished . take the tensioner off and give it a good check before you buy any parts to replace and check between base and arm
