Not sure what it is but at the front end of the sump (underneath), Directly above the front axle is a little round hole about 2cm dia. Inside this hole is a wire mesh filter type looking thing not that i could get it out. There is a constant drip from this hole, any ideas? i guess its a breather but my haynes manual aint turned up yet.

Thanks,
Mark.

I could take some photos if it would help?

It's a drain hole for the timing belt chest you've probly got a seal gone inside. If it's a big drip I'd get it sorted asap or the belt will get contaminated and could bust. If it's a little drip I'd think about getting it done asap for the same reasons.

Remember there are THREE oil seals in there, the likely ones for cranksahaft and camshaft, and much less likely for the injection pump.

You might as well change everything in there while your at it, biggest problem is loosening and tightening the crankshaft pulley

Loosening it isn't such a huge problem - gettin' thur booga done back up to best part of 200lbft of torque is the real 'nad kicker.

There are tools you can get to lock the flywheel - or ones you can 'adapt' - but you'll never do it by leaving it in gear and hoping the clutch will hold it :(

If anyones got a 'fix' for this, I'm seriously interested. CharlesY ?

Cheers,

Did you lock the flywheel to do it up though? Used a big torque wrench on MHM's crank pulley and it would turn the engine over against the clutch at well less than the specified torque.

take a plug or injector oot. then feed a length of old fan belt down the hole, remember to leave plenty hanging out fer recovery porpoises. you should be able to tighten up the nut then without the injun turning. dunno if it works on big injuns but it does on motorbike injuns and small static plant. or try wedging a big screwdriver into the starter ring teeth.

Yeah, it's the locking it that's the beggar, not the giving it enuff welly to torque it.

Tried the screwdriver thing, not easy. Like the fan belt idea tho'. Or you could feed in the head of the nearest passing DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKER. That'd do it too.

ave bin thinkin and ah reckon if you was gonna do the fan belt, or bit of rope down the plug ole thing, you'd want to make sure it wur on comp stroke so both valves are shut

Well im going to be doing this under the supervision of a lorry meachanic/bodybuilder who has a mahoosive workshop and tool kit so kinda not panicing too much. As for changing evr=erything i take it you mean all seals, belt, gaskets washers and bush? or am i missing something.

And ave a look at your water pump.
