Hi new so be gentle. 1996 Land Rover Discovery ES TDI Auto, Changed last year from manual to auto, had problems starting over winter so changed the battery no joy, changed glow plugs no joy, new starter motor still having problems, as I'm a long distance driver i only travel about 2 miles to work on Monday park it up. May get back Wed or Fri. did not have this problem for three years with manual. whot to do next ?

attempt? you gotta be more specific... does it spin and not fire? Does it just go CLICK when you turn the key? Does it go CLICK and all the dash lights dim?

What do you call an attempt? Turning the key? Turning the key, and then smacking the starter? Turning the key, holding it there til it smokes, then finding a jump battery?

Go on, help us to help you :D
 
OK well if its turning over at a healthy speed then there is a deeper problem. If it turns over slowly then speeds up then check all the connections, clean them with emery and reattach with vaseline.

If it turns over quickly but takes ages to fire, check the glow plugs and relay, but on a TDi you rarely need the plugs - its more likely to be an air leak in one of the fuel lines. That or its got very poor compression, which suggests more worries.

OK sorry first thing on a morning it turns over very slowly twice then it will fire on the third turn of the key after that its OK all day.
 
Check the connections on the back of the starter - mine did this, that fixed it.

Oh, and the engine-to-chassis and batery-to-chassis ones too.

Hi sorry its tuck so long to get back to you.
i have finally sorted it out.
After i did every thing you suggested i change the fuel filter, Still no joy.
then i saw that a rubber hose had perished on wot looked like a sort of vacuum unit on the accelerator so i changed it and hay presto.

am i right in calling this a vacuum as i couldn't find it in the work shop manual it has a tube coming of it to a T joint one gos in to the drivers compartment and the other vanishes under the windscreen washer tank ?

yeah but why should that stop it from starting? Unless its two unrelated faults, one of which has fixed itself...
