Been a busy few days.
Coming home from work tonight, the speedo decided to die in spectacular fashion. Doing the usual 64mph (2k 5th). It decided to drop to 0 back up to 130 then to 70, and then just flicked around the clock for a few seconds. Then died completely.

Any ideas?
The garage think it could either be a 'transponder' or snapped cable.
Any other other ideas?

'96 300tdi.

Had the back up on the ramps and drivers wheel on the jack. Found where it comes out of the transfer box (i think) but tried to find it behind the clocks and there is a plate in the way.

Now u found the transducer remove the electrical connection and clean and then replace, if the speedo still doesn't function replace the transducer. Why do yo want to get to the speedo head?

Apparently it is cable.

But now it is back working. Hit a speed bump today on site a bit quick. Then it started working again.

Cable on Defenders, electric on Discos AFAIK (mine is electric and is a 95 300)

I have just replaced my transponder, the corners of the driver pin on it can round off and it stops turning properly. Bit fiddly to change but not a difficult job.

Speed sensor on the box.easy to replace with gentle hands.

It has stopped working again.
Does anyone have to part no. For the drive. No idea what part is broken. So will replace it all.

I don't but can search for you. Transducer speed YBE100540 plus the O ring seal 571665.
