We have a freelander diesel 2004. We have only ever had 1 key & one fob but have always intended to buy a spare key & fob. That time has come as they fob button has worn through so have to the unlock car manually

OK, rang the dealer, for a spare key with transponder & spare key fob. From stealership to supply fob n key & programme both they want a cool £380. They did cheerfully point that it is inclusive of vat.

It appears i mindfield.

Can i buy a spare fob off ebay & put a battery in it, blip it 5 times quickly so that it copies the existing memory to work ( i had to do this when battery needed replacing in existing fob ) & find somewhere or someone who can supply a spare key with transponder cheaper then the stealership?
I am happy to have both fob & key supplied by one supplier. I live in East Devon any ideas please.

If the button is worn, just replace the fob case. Drop the circuit board into the new case and replace the battery while you're at it. Dead cheap fix.

Save the money, you will need it when something more important breaks.

Most good key cutting places will clone your original key for a lot less than that.

Its the key that's the issue rather than fob obv. A couple of years back I ended up going to main dealer for spare key - mega bucks. I recall at the time that you could get the key blank and have it cut but the transponder was the issue. Don't know if this has changed but this is my 2 pennies. Re you thoughts on the forum - hopefully we not so bad but we do take some stick from other LR owners from time to time and as result can be a bit sensitive. One thing that can cause a bit of friction is when a member fails to do a quick search to see if the problem has already been dealt with - cant remember ever introducing myself.

Transponders can be copied into the spare giving you two keys with the same transponder code. As long as you have one working key.

My local auto key place have ordered me two duplicate keys with programmed transponders within for £60 each. Fair enough I thought, I'm guessing he gets them from Land Rover with some sort of bulk buy discount at some point in the buying system.

I also didn't find any normal locksmiths that could duplicate a key with a transponder in. Copy the key yes but transponder no.

I've just grabbed a secondhand spare 17TN standard Freelander fob off Ebay for £2.75 so I'll be getting the same bloke to programme this for me as a favour, hopefully.
