The UJ on the front prop which connects to the T/box was squeaking and had recently started cluncking at low spped, so I decided to replace it with a GKN one. Upon removing the fron prop I noticed that the flange on the front of the T/box had a small amount of lateral play, nothing drastic approximately 1-1.5mm. After changing the UJ and refitting the prop the squeaking appears to have stopped, however the clunk remains. If the bearing on the output shaft was faulty, would you realistically expect it to clunk. What are the symptoms.?! Or does this sound like something more terminal.?!

It's a 1994 Defender 300TDI with a Disco T/box. As i say its mainly evident at low speed, it is possible that it is there at higherspees just that i can not hear it due to road noise. i have no issues selecting any of the 5 gears and there are no issues selecting Hi/Lo or entering Diff lock.
 
Im not sure why but front tfer output always seems to have some lift in it
Its worth checking the a frame ball joint as well
 
It's really annoying as its just come out of nowhere. The T/box has been well looked after and regularly had new oil.
 
Before I start worrying about finding a replacement T/box, can anyone suggest what I can do to test the box to either prove or disprove the issue..?!
 
jack a front and rear wheel up and contr rotate both props a the same time you can feel play in center diff then ,remove sump plate and check for end float on the 3 gearts ,input ,intermediate and center diff, intermediate can be taken up by tightening rear nut carefully

Hi i had a squeak like that last week then the front diff went bang,changed it for second hand diff now no squeak good luck.

I just wished I could identify the issue as I can't afford just to just keep throwing money at different possibilities. :(
 
Ok a quick update....

I removed the front prop shaft this morning and went for a test drive with diff lock engaged. Surprisingly there was no knocking or any squealing. The actual prop itself appears to slide as it should with absolutely no movement in either of the UJ's, likewise there is no excess play in the front diff.

Any ideas.?! Ideally it's not the Transferbox. I read James suggestion above to remove sump, but in all truthfulness it just confuses me. :(
 
just to clarify, you have a squeak and a clunk?

re the squeak, sure it is related to the drivetrain? the aux tensioner sounds very much like that. ie. does it do it when engine on but not moving?

does the clunk only happen on take off? is your tbox leaking? and have you checked the oil level recently?

I don't think it's the belt, I did have problem with a loose retaining bolt on the belt tensioner which I had to helicoil. I'm fairly sure the squeal is from underneath. There is no clucking from take off, infact it's rather smooth as are the gear changes. The clunk is intermittent at best and without warning. The t/box has new oil in it and has no leaks. It's really annoying me now :frusty: :)


Righty..... I think I'm making some progress!

I've actually been out literally scrutinising the Landy and I have found some issues which I hope may actually be the culprit.

First. There is a small amount of movement in the radius arm bushes when moving it with a pry bar. It's so minimum it may be normal. See video.

Second. The rear offside shock absorber is completely and totally buggered (seriously buggered). See video.

Thirdly. ...and most plausible if not out right dangerous is the front offside shock absorber. I noticed when lying underneath the landy the bush and retaining nut is missing :eek:!!!! When pushing on up the chassis you can observe the bottom of the shock absorber literally go up and through the seating plate, in doing so it knocks against the edge!!!!! Sorry no video. Eliminate the cheapest options first me thinks!!! I'm going to order a new set of springs and dampers and then change the bushes in the A-Frame and Radius Arms before buggering around with the t/box. :D
