Just a tip, AC dries the air that runs trough it, so it helps demist your screen more quickly. It doesn't need to be set on cold for that. Aside from that, some people on the Toyota Owners Club forum had been using the belt from the non-AC equipped versions of the Avensis to bypass running the AC compressor. I don't know if the TD4 has a non-AC equipped version, or if there is a suitable route for a shorter belt to miss out the compressor without fouling on something else, though.

I thought it used two belts lol I’ll need to check. Just baffles me that something that is knowen to go. That they don’t have an updated part. I was complentatino the pulley as I grudge paying 100 quid upwards for one that won’t fall apart in 50k as I plan on keeping it till it dies. But it’s something I only want to change once and enjoy the hippo.
I’ll have a look and see what I can come up with. As I’m not sure why it’s dampend in the first place. As I don’t imagine that much shock would travel through it

AC or no AC a solid pulley is a bad idea. The TD4 has a cast crank which can break. The damper built into the pulley allows load on all ancillaries to be varied without stressing the crank. Solid pulley would lead to early crank failure I am sure. Leave the AC seperate belt off if you want, but keep the proper pulley in place would be my advice.
That’s what I was looking for. Couldn’t find out if they were forged or cast. Doodlebugs. So anyone know of the best prices for the oem ones. And best place to buy.
I know on my old golf I got a lot from gfb which had a replacement crank pulley. Non dampend. Due to reduced weight That was my thinking lol. Glad I found the forum.

For some reason shotts has its own weather system. But lots of good back roads and dirt tracks greenlanes etc so I’m lucky that way. Just need to figure out where I can get the hippo in and some off road tyres too lol

What method did you use to hold pulley whilst unbolting please?
Yer gonna laugh when I tell ye but. A big spanner. Open end jammed against castelation on pully. Braced against sump guard frame. With a extension bar through the ring end. Tied to the sump guard frame with a big jubilee clamp. Not the right way but it worked. Neighbour was intrigued by my ingenuity. Still took two of us standing on a scaffold pole. To crack it off tho lol

Sounds creative! There is a tool to fit the crank end but never seen one. Don't be tempted to use an impact gun. Crank fracture risk is high.
