Can someone please explain the difference between Safari snorkels and the ones with a mushroom top ? Apart from design is there any difference for day to day use ?

The mushroom type (enclosed top) snorkels such as the Mantec snorkels vs the forward facing (scoop type) snorkels such as Safari/southdown.. few things I have been looking into but can not find a definate answer.
Regarding water separation, I noticed the safari ones boast about superior "water separator system built into the air ram", although there is no mention of such a system on the southdown snorkels, guessing it's not something to be overly concerned about as they state it's mainly for "torrential tropical storms", not like we get many of those in the UK, but still what system do the southdown snorkels use to remove rain water from the air stream going to your engine?
Air Ram Effect - The safari snorkels claim the front facing snorkels such as the safari snorkels (i know the safari air ram can be rotated), has an air ram effect that can help engine performance - apparently, does it make that much of a difference compared to a snorkel such as Mantec that has either a mushroom top or is pointing towards the rear of the vehicle?
On a purely cosmetic point of view (If looking for one to fit a disco) i can see why people prefer the southdown/mantec setup rather than the safari snorkels which do look a bit farmer setup with the whole setup being external rather than running down inside the wing.

Dummy Ejection Facilitator..
Safari's have a plastic lip with grooves that allow the water to run down the Outside of the snorkel tube. Never had a mantec so don't know how there's work..

Ah, ok well that clears up the theory/myth of the "air ram effect", I heard a few people talking about it once, guessing they got confused with the word "air ram" and made their own theory up.. thanks for the info, one thing to strike off the comparison list.
