Sorry for all these questions over this weekend but trying to ride my luck in the tumble dryer thread i have another dilemma.

I seemed to have developed two broken bolts that attach the rear stub axle to the axle on my disco.

Trouble is I am struggling to remove the remains of the bolts.

There isn't enough meat sticking out to get anything on them and in addition they have been done up with loctite.

Drilling seems to just burn up and eat the drill bits.

So any suggestions for removal would be most appreciated.
 
you will need some proper drill bits (cobalt etc)as bolts are 10.9s,or you could weld a washer to thread then a nut to washer heat loosens the threadloc
 
mate ive got a set of decent drill bits here and a tap and dye to tidy the threads up after if you want to borrow um?
 
Do you have access to oxy at all? I would drill them, use a bolt extractor (reverse threaded tapered bolt thingy) and heat and they will come out...

Matt, yes please buddy.

John, no oxy yet, working on that at the moment.
 
Get some good quality hardened drill bits. Drill through with a small size first and then step up in size, by 1 or 2 mm at a time until you get to the tapping drill size, or slightly smaller. You must drill centrally and square to the bolt or you'll drill into the housing.
You could try 'easy outs' at various stages... but I've never had much success with them. They are also very easy to snap off at smaller sizes and once you've done that.. your knackered !! you will never drill one of those out !
I would also be cautious of knocking in the torque bit as suggested above for the same reason. Although you may find it works if you get a large enough one to hold...but if you ring it off.. your in the **** !!
What ever you decide to do.. take your time, hardened drills are great and will easily drill through most bolts, but they are brittle and easily snapped... you'll need a steady hand ! Once you've opened the hole out as much as possible... retap the housing.. this will either force the remains of the bolt out or cut through to the original thread.

Well I think first off I'm going to try James's welding a nut on plan. After that......

Well if it goes tits up then it's a change of axle, but luckily there are plenty of those for a disco.

But i'm not planning on it going wrong. :D
