Hi,

I have just blanked off the EGR valve on the TD4 and put a new crankcase breather on, but the car is still not driving right. The symptoms are as follows.

If I put my foot down the revs start picking and then it lays down a pretty heavy black smoke screen, before stopping smoking. At about 4000rpm the car no longer pulls and the revs increase, but the speed does not really change.

Unsure how to proceed and am after some advice.

Have you checked the intercooler hoses for holes?
Also check the contacts are clean on the fuel rail pressure sensor.

it won't ..
4000 rpm is way way above peak torque rpm of 1750 rpm or so ..
i.e. there's much Less torque at 4k rpm ..

apart from possible split intercooler hoses .. faulty turbo vane actuating system .. and other possibilities ..
might also be a result of whatever cleaning you've done .. and the residue being blown out the exhaust ..

I will check the hoses, but reading hd3 post it looks like 4000 rpm is too high. I am comparing it to my Berlingo van which pulls better at the higher rpm scale.

Does smoking happen as you are not providing enough air for the fuel to burn?

black smoke is either not enough air .. or too much fuel

I didn't bother cleaning out the manifold as although it was a little gummed up, it would not affect airflow.

The berlingo is a 1.6 HDi 90PS and is goes like a rocket when compared to the TD4

If that's correct your clutch is going as well as your smoke problem.

Use proper Diesel in it mate, not the supermarket stuff,
this will help reduce the black smoke as well,
and its only about £3 more for 3/4 of a tank..

P.S
3750-4000 is about max for performance anything higher and your just wringing its neck..

The Wife does to always fill up with Tesco Diesel, so I will tell her about that.

As to the revs, at least I now know that 4000 rpm is about the max.

td4 .. +20bhp ( standard tuning ) .. and 527 lb heavier than the berlingo .. ( unladen weights )

engine torque:
260 nm ( 191.7 ftlb ) td4 .. .. 215 nm ( 158 ftlb ) berlingo

plus the hippo has the ird / propshafts / rear diff
which would no doubt eat up some available horsepower ..

a.f.a.i.k .. horsepower is more of a time related value
whereas torque be a turning power value .. ( e.g. when using a torque wrench )

i once drove a couple of hgv's with the gmc 318(bhp) 2-stroke diesel ..
unladen .. potentialy fast acceleration ..
add weight .. show it an incline or a headwind .. pulling power was very seriously shyte ..

pipes for sure, happended to mine, black smoke everywhere. It was fine at idle and up to about 2k ish revs then blurghh..... only found mine revving it and RAC Man stuck his finger in the right angle inlet pipe, split, £3 later all done.
