HI
Hope I am doing this right as am new to the forum. Well here goes. I have a Range Rover L322 2004 TD6. Love it to bits. Towing caravan with it today and at low revs / low speed it started to push black smoke out of the exhaust. Higher speed / revs no problem. Not had the issue before and it appears to be running fine with no warning lights. Any thoughts what this could be. It did continue but no where near as much once I unhitched the caravan, particularly if I accelerated hard away from standing. Any inspiritaion gratefully received.

they should smoke under heave load so long as its black diesel fumes not blue oil burning fumes

Iv pulled a 3 tonne load with my l322, no smoke present when pulling up hill at all.
You could have a dodgy EGR valve??
Iv bypassed my EGR - it gives the engine more torque and less smoke once bypassed

And also fails next years MOT.

checking the egr is good advise, ripping the bl00dy thing off is better advise. also make sure the breather filter system on the cam cover has been changed. a blocked one can cause smoke and eventual turbo failure.

I thought the cam breather filter was the cyclone type that dont need changing ? Or is it a stupid filter sponge ? I'm still learning about the td6 although i know for the freelander td4 a cyclone filter could be retro fitted so wonder if the same can be done for the td6 ?
Thanks

Breather needs changing every twelve months tobe safe.
I would get the injectors tested properly leaking on the nozzles very coman.
As for removing the egr it would not fail an Mot but could make it harder to pass

still the little sponge filter in there, recommended anual change. for the price its not worth risking.

i reckon you can change it for the maintenance free cyclone type. iv noticed a few of the parts off the freelander td4 engine are the same on the TD6 range rover as my egr mod was off my freelander and i reckon the crankcase breather will fit too.

where abouts is the breather located on the TD6 ? just under the top engine tray ?
thanks :)

take the engine cover off and its towards the back, it does look the the same as ones fitted to td4 and rover 75 engines but i never tried or even thought about using there uprated parts to be honest. food for thought, thanks.

Bad week for me!... Gear box on my L322 2006 3TD6 Vogue went.
Main dealer quoted me £5,126 for a replacement, found a good guy in Rochdale who will recon mine for half the price.
Secondly how difficult is it to change the cam breather on my car?
Cheers
Pat.

Sorry to hear that mate

And yes 5k is very dear

There are garages online who supply and fit for £1,900

Regarding the cam breather- a 15 minute job

Was it not 2006 where the L322 supposedly got more reliable? :-\

Stu

Only more reliable because they have yet to reach the end of their design life of 7 years:rolleyes: Look at the increasing number of L322 problems cropping up. When I first got my P38, L322 questions were few and far between. Not any more:eek:

Still 95% of all posts are p38 related

I think that's proof that the p38 is still less reliable than the l322

P38 is older, as the L322 reaches the 10 year mark watch the failures:eek:

Mines 10 years old now
Air suspensions all new, on 145k, still runs sweet.

As any car and you must agree, p38 or l322, as long as they are looked after and serviced well they will go on forever!
I think a lot of the time its their hopeless owners that cause half of the problems lol
