--> The story so far;

Have been noticing a gradual decrease in power on my 200 Tdi converted 110.

About 2 months ago I was tweaking the fuel injection pump and up until recently it has been driving superbly with bundles of power and pull.

However, recently it seems to be struggling to boost, and power loss is most noticeable at the top end of the rev range - the revs seem a bit erratic and jerky when you are at high revs.

It is also smoking black more than it used to, for instance just maintaining 50mph on a relatively flat road gives a wispy black smoke just visible in the wing mirror.

I've checked the obvious things (intercooler pipes, air filter etc) and they seem to be fine, as they are only 12 months old.

Other things that may be related, I had been running on 50/50 veg oil up until recently, but have only put diesel in for the last 400 miles or so.

I also was fiddling with the injection pump a while back, as in this thread, which did make a really nice improvement up until recently.

I would have said delaminated intercooler pipe but if you are sure they are good then maybe fuel filter but smoke does suggest a lack of air flow, is the air filter ok?

Cheers Steve

Fuel filter was changed 100 miles ago, and pipes are all spot on. Turbo I'm not sure on. Maybe it is on the way out? If it is, is there any way I can test it?

Wonder if the tweaks I made to the injection pump could have damaged it in some way? I've read about higher exhaust gas temperatures etc, any way this could have hurt it?

remove intake pipe and see how much free play is in the impellar, I had a smokey TD years ago on checking there was so much play the impellar had gouged the housing

Cheers Steve

Will do, cheers.

Going to try a new lift pump and double check all the hoses tomorrow after work... also going to put the injection pump settings back a bit too.

I wouldn't have thought the egt would get that high without massive adjustment.. It might be coincidental? As ebbadger says, check turbo. It's for and aft play you are looking for really I think..

You would be surprised just how high egts can get.
My last disco was a td5 and the common opinion was 700 ish max, problem was they do that std!, so i ended up nearer 900 full chat up a hill.
Cracked the turbo in the end many many miles later.
But i doubt on a 300 it will be that at all
Try it with the air filter hose off the turbo so you can eliminate everything upstream of the turbo.
On the turbo if the rotor fan is not touching the casing and no oil is coming out of the exhaust it should be fine.

I would remove the injectors and chech to see if they have a build up of crap on the tips, if so then clean with a wire bush and refit and the black smoke will stop
