Hi. I recently brought a 3.9 V8 Disco and had a couple of questions.

Its my first off roader, I'm more used to normal cars, but I went for the V8 because I thought it might have a bit more power and help me keep up with other traffic.

The problem is mainly when its cold, it seems to accelorate very slowly. I have some ticking noise from the exhaust which improves when warm, and Kwik fit recon one of the cats is faulty (Makes a rattling noise when thumped) Could this cause a reduction in power?

Its well serviced, the air filter could do with a change but its not too bad.

Any advice would be apprecated, and some feedback from anyone who's driven a healthy V8.

Thanks

Brian

Hello Brian, i also have just got my self a Discovery V8, its a 2004 4Ltr with LPG, suppost to have around 180 BHP (when runing on petrol) before i got the Landy i had a Nissan Terrano 3 LTR sve 150 BHP, now i love my Landy, but its not got much....."poke",i went for the V8 over a TD5 as i wanted a bit of power but even running on pertol in sports mode its...well....slow, the Diesel Terrano would of left it for dead...not that I want my Terrano back, it handelled like an Asda trolly, the disco has much better maners, i just thought a v8 would "go like stink, pin me to the seat !!!" but not to be, its lovley and smooth, i love the autobox, love eveything about it..yep i know its a very heavy car...all i can say is that the TD5 must strugle with around 50 BHP less

the ticking noise will be a leak somewhere on the exhaust manifolds or downpipes, get it sorted as soon as you can otherwise it's posible you will burn out an exhaust valve. you haven't said what age your disco is but i presume it's an older one? if the core of the cat has dislodged it can partially block the pipe thereby causing a restriction which will lose you power:( v8's can be finnicky so if they haven't been done recently get it a new set of plugs/dizzy cap and leads then get the ignition timing checked. you do have to boot em a bit but my v8 pins me to the seat pretty well, it's no sports car but sounds like you are down on power

Cheers guys. I was not expecting sports car perfomance but a little life would be great. I am looking at some Catalytic convertors on ebay at the moment. My Disco is a 1995 M reg by the way.

Would an aftermarket Air filter make much difference on these engine's?

Had the cats removed today and its better. I will get it seviced and the timing checked after this weekends play in the sand pits.. :)

I went to overtake earlier in my 4.0L expecting rocket like responces, It didn't come, however, drop a gear and she will go, not running on LPG. My 3.5 Range Rover however will go when asked.

For goodness sake don't go to kwik ****

I know what you mean, but I know the guys at my local branch and they do know what they are doing. I do most of the mechanical stuff myself anyway, its just MOT's, tyres they do, I asked them to check the exhaust out after getting a slow puncture fixed (Grit in the beading after a day at Bures pits)
