Next job on the list is the overly slack steering on my TD5.

Just got the wife to move the wheel around to see if I can see where most of the play is, and I noticed that the axle is moving about laterally, with quite a lot of play in the right hand end of the panhard rod (as you look at it from the front of the car).

It seems that the rod is moving about in the bracket it is bolted to.

Is this going to be the cause of all the slop in my steering? It looks a bit dodgy to me :(

Got the panhard off, and the movement looks to be a combination wear in the bush, the bolt and the bracket.
Going to replace the bolts anyway, but I dont think my vice is big enough to do the bushes... I'll buy some anyhow I guess.

Better to buy LR ones over britpart do we think?

i d get poly bush ones do both ends burn and hack sawsplit in outer old bush pickle out with chisel fit new ,original bushes should only be genuine and need press to refit poly dont, and if ever needed doing again esay diy job,rbx101340g is genuine bush £8 rbx101340py is poly £6 never use pattern standard bushes they dont fit well, genuine standard bushes are good but really pro job removal/ refit ,poly bushes easy diy

Ooops - Ive just ordered a set of genuiine LR ones... :)
I have a mate with a press, so I'm hoping to be able to bend his arm.
Cheers James

hi if not you can always use a length off stud m16 and draw the in, it takes a bit off time but works well

Thats an idea Paul, cheers.
I was thinking of possibly using the old bolts for the very same purpose.

Well I've just removed both panhard rod bushes using the burning/hacksaw method - worked well.
My own small variation was to saw 2 shallow cuts about 1/4" (6mm) apart, then peel this down like opening a sardine tin. I didn't have to risk cutting very deep and damaging the rod, and the strip just rolled back when tapped with a pin punch.

I just hope that the UPS delivery isnt too late with the new ones :)

Was the bolt done right up?

If it doesn't clamp up the middle tube section in the bush it will move about. Had exactly the same thing on a LR a couple of years ago, the bush was perfect but someone just hadn't done the bolt up properly.

Hi discomania.
Yes, it was done up tight, but it still seemed to move around quite a bit.
There was a lot of rust on the sloppy chassis end, making me think that there had been some metal rubbing going on. The bush and bolt this end were noticebly more worn than the axle end.
I'll check that the bracket cinches up on the bush when I replace the rod, and perhaps add a washer/shim or something to make sure it does clamp the bush OK.

Oh now I'm buggered...

Rimmer Brothers -has anyone used them before? My order has been completely screwed up by them! GRRRRRR.

Well after a quick trip to Harwoods Edenbridge to get the last remaining Panhard Bush in the world Ive got the rod back on - and a great improvement in the steering.

All I need now is to get a torque wrench that goes to 230nM - crikey thats tight isnt it!!!

DiscoMania I think you might have been correct that one of the bolts just wasn't dont up tight enough before.

Thanks to all who helped (again).
