Hey,

I like the look of side exit exhausts, but I've got a couple of questions before I start thinking about buying a kit / making my own:

1) Are they road legal?
2) Can I pass my MOT with a side exit exhaust?
3) Can I buy an exhaust kit?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Well there are a fair number of them out on the roads, as long as all the boxes are still there and the noise is not increased much.

Are you a good welder? I would not make one of these unless you are, besides should you not be saving up for a new chassis? These are really to reduce the exhaust pipe run under the vehicle therefore reducing the chances of being knocked and bashed while off road...

Hiya Pos

I had one on mine looks really "cool"

in the end took it off and put a std exhaust from a defender minus the back box (in my case i got rid of the cat too) so i used just the middle boy and ran a straght thru pipe that emerged at the rear of the vehicle to the left of the rear hitch (left hand side if your standing behind the vehicle)

Why did i get rid of the side entry exhaust?

Because everytime i put my foot down heavy then i would get a black puff of diesel down the passenger side of the vehicle then a few days later would have to clean the side down plus in my case pressure wash the canvas too!
my side-exit exhaust was midway on a SWB just below the tank filler cap about 18 inches under

all in all i found a straght-thru rear entry system better - as it used Std (Cheep) parts & if you need / want to wade you can attach a 90 bend to the rear section and run your tailpipe as high as you want / need - then clamp it to the rear of the vehicle with a metal pipe clamp and some wing-bolts & lock washers - at the end of the day remove it & throw the section in the back

I think putting in the rear entry system system i have now cst me a total of maybe 60 quid and a few hrs

Thanks for all the replies. I've decided to stay with what I have considering that I am not a particularly good welder, and think that my money could be better spent elsewhere to be honest.

Disco, don't quite need a new chassis yet it's in good nick but there's just one little patch that's rotten through which I'm going to have welded up!

Thanks again

im gona get a side exit exhaust as soon as ive done a few other bits (like getting a tdi engine!).

i didnt realise u need a bend to stop water rushin in wen wading. My exhaust system currently stops a few inches after the main silencer.. pretty much in the middle of the motor ...i cut the rest off cos it was so damn uglY! Its only a temporary measure though. Does this mine i will be fcuked if i go through water...or will it be fine as long as the engine is running?

Providing the engine is running the exhaust won't "inhale" water... if the exit of the exhaust is submerged and you stall it, you'll get more or less immediate water ingress. Highly unlikely this would cause any damage, most diesels will restart with a hot engine even if the exhaust is submerged and blow it through.

Output pressure from the exhaust far exceeds atmospheric pressure while the engine is running - in order to overcome that you'd need to be running at such a depth that even a floating snorkel wouldn't be feasible.

Best plan... don't stall it ;)

Is that on the rear leg where the towbar rear bracket and tiedown shackle fits? Because there is a dip in the chassis there. water can collect and rot sets in mine has gone there as well.

It's not the dip that's rusted away that's in good condition. It's behind my back passenger side suspension spring on the main rail. Not that far away from the dip I suppose

Have you given your rear crossmember and outriggers a bash/poke about?

Might as well find all the dodgey bits if your going to go to a welder.

Side exhausts are a bit daft really, fumes creepin up an in ya window, more suited to a big American pork sword car than a landy. i bought this motor in this state, check out the stickers...... DONT DO IT!
