Out green laneing in Wales and my PAS belt shredded. It had been squeaking for a few days and then went. It started to squeak really loudly and then clouds of smoke before snapping.

The alternator belt also has a slight squeak as well. Both looked quite old with cracking.

Belt or pump?

Belt! You never mentioned anything to do with the pump, but say the belt was old and cracking!? Change the alternator one aswell.

if I turn the pump by hand hand it turns easily for about a turn and then hits resistance, if you turn it back slightly it will turn again for about a turn. It feels slightly rough as I turn it.

I think your belt probably shredded cos it's old.
