hello everyone, hope you are all well.
The wife is after a new car and she has spotted a freeelander on an 05 plate.
It's a TD4 in grey, with the roof bit that comes off at the back.
Not sure what the mileage is but the price is £5,700.

Now, I got severely stung with HGF on my old MGF, so I'm weary of rovers.
From various googling around (mainly FreeLander Head Gasket) I see that HGF was an issue on the freelander as well.

So here's my questions:
1) Is the HGF still an issue on the 05 freelander - or was it resolved earlier in the production.

2) Is HGF an issue on the TD4 engine at all?

3) What should I be on the lookout for when I go view the car in the daylight?

4) Are there any major, common faults with the 05 TD4 model?

Buy a DISCO or a RANGE.

HGF is not known to be a problem on the TD4.

05 Freelander you are speaking of has the 2 litre BMW TD4 engine which is very reliable.

You will see though this forum lots of problems with Freelanders. What you never see is people saying how good Freelanders are because people tend not to bother talking about the +ve aspects of something.

I have had my 04 TD4 Freelander for about 2 years now and it has been very reliable. I had one or two items go wrong soon after I bought the car second hand with 27000 miles on the clock (heated screen not working, console bulb failures) and now the sat nav doesnt want to find a lock. But the mechanical aspect of the vehicle has been as good as anything I have owned.

If you keep the car serviced I would say its going to be faily reliable, but then I have not done that many miles. IRD and VCU seem to be fairly common issues, but that may just be some of the older (pre facelift) vehicles. It's never going to be as reliable as , say, a japanese car, but I really think most of the problems have been ironed out.

If you do buy the car, get a RoverRon Synergy 2 tuning module fitted. It makes all the difference.

i agree wit rainady i live in the states very few of those gems here if any ,,,just rem used is used and not new ,,,ps no rover floats!

I my self moved from a MGF (yes had HGF too) to a TD4. So far is been very reliable, a few repairs needed - PAS pump and starter motor. The starter probably could have been repaired but I prefer to replace items (saves time if not money).

Overall it's built so much better than the MGF and the TD4 is a good engine. I spent a fortune on my MG, brake capliers, corroded pipes, HGF, raditor, suspension, rust, bits falling off - all on a younger car.

The later (05) Freelanders should be much improved on the original. There are one or two expensive items which are a problem - IRD, VCU and fuel pumps seems to be the main gripe - but plenty can go wrong on most cars.

As long as you can keep up with the additional running costs of a more expensive to run car, you'll be ok (as opposed to a small hatch). Have fun with it and take it off road.

Yes, do take it off road at least once. If you are going to buy an expensive to run car you may as well enjoy why the car was designed.

I had one major session off road and the car kept up with all similar model cars. It was my lack of off road driving and using road tyres that let the car down not the car itself. But dont run the car in too deep ruts in a forrested area. My sills took quite a beating.
