Ive noticed a slight oil leak from what I believe is the rear diff. The car does not do many miles as my wife uses it to travel to work which is just 5 minutes away. I obviously need to get it sorted but could I leave this till the new year? Its not sufficient that Ive noticed any oil on the drive. Obviously I don't know how long the leak has been going on for.

check level and top up as required any gear oil would do ep 90 or 75w/90 80w/90 etc ,before removing flange to get to seal check if theres play in bearings ,there should be no play apart from some rotational

Is this the propshaft bearings your referring to? Sorry if its a daft question.
 
check them as well but i meant diff pinion bearings if theres any play seal will leak though it just may need a new seal ,preload of pinion bearings is set by a crushable spacer between the two bearings tightening flange nut crushes spacer until correct preload is achieved which can be done with a torque meter or felt by hand ie all play removed and tightened a little more till you can feel slightly more resistance

Thanks for the advice. Must admit I am now confused...I need to do a bit more reading on this!
 
What James is saying is that the leak is most probably coming from the front of the diff where the prop attaches and then running to the back of the diff when driving.
As he says just keep your eye on the oil level for the short term.
