Due to a loss of power, possibly due to fuel filter or pump, I've decided that I may as well give my Disco a full service.

It all looks pretty straight forward, but having never worked on a Land Rover before (we have serviced our Corrado) what I'm wanting to find out is, what oils/fluids you guys recommend for the transfer box an difs as there are so many to choose from its a little confusing, an how much will I need to buy?

Does anyone have a list that they'd work from in terms of what they would buy and how much of each oil/fluid?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, I have seen somewhere that the transmission oil is only available to/through dealers. Is that right? Sounds odd to me!! lol

no off course not , you can use atf dexron 2 or 3 without issues ,or buy mtf94 google stc9157 or stc9158
 
Cheers James. Immediately after posting that last comment, I actually found a suitable fluid at GSF, but I'm not a fan of carlube products (not been that good when I've used them before).
 
Land Rover recommendations:

Lubrication types and refill quantities Disco 2 TD5 (manual gearbox)

Lube type - Capacity (ltrs)

Engine - 10W/30 - 7.2
Gearbox - MTF 94 - 2.3
Transfer box - 75W/90R - 2
Front axle - 75W/90R - 1.6
Rear Axle - 75W/90R - 1.6

Clutch/brakes - Dot 4 compliant
Power steering - Texaco 14315

Anti-freeze - Havoline XLC - 50% - 4 ltrs

when you say lose of power can you be a bit more specific on the isue as a service probably wont fix the problem

I'll try and explain in a bit more detail.

As I came off a roundabout on my drive to work, whilst in third gear just before i was about to change up to forth, the engine kind of spluttered, but then carried on once in forth gear. I back off the throttle a bit and took it carefully. It was only when i was in fifth gear i noticed the loss of power. Normally, it'll sit quite happily at 70-75mph, even 80. I got up to 70 (still not pushing it too hard) along the A46. I needed to overtake and move lane, but getting up to 75mph was very slow, and although i was speeding up, you couldn't feel much pull. From there, i backed off comepletely and slowed and stuck to about 50-55mph.

Seems to pull alright through the first four gears but with a noticable loss of power. You can still hear the turbo working (although quieter than normal). I figured it most likely down to something fuel related (and of course, the turbo won't run like normal if its not getting the fuel through). I've spoken to a couple of garages, one that i trust with any work we can't do ourselves, and they both seem to back up my thoughts, suggesting possibly the fuel filter to be the main fault. we decided, the Disco could do with a big service, and if we were changing the fuel filter, we'd just do the lot.

Any thoughts?
 
Check for oil on the injector loom and the plug where it goes into the ECU, very common problem with the TD5.

yep as you are changing filter have a look at the airbleed valve first pipe on the left of filter head .
possible it needs injector seals done or the oil in eco loom

I'd heard the airbleed valve can get a bit clogged up with muck and sedament, so was planning on checking it and giving it a clean.

Will definitely check the injector seals. That said, i had the injectors and seals go on our old mondeo, and it felt completly different, so fingers crossed it is just down to fueling.

I'm prepared for the worst though.........
 
the injector seals coper washers corode then let exhuast gases into the diesel so when you labour it in 5 gear it might just be one seal that blows giving mild judders gearstick wobble is a good sign its miss firing so is soot in the tank or pump or bleedvalve +nonreturn valve
 
Well, the service was a good idea. Still need to change the oils and oil filters, but a new air filter and fuel filter did the job, and the disco is now running better than ever (since we bought it anyway).
