hi again ,

So on the way back to london I went at 40mph any faster and had serious engine vibration and grating noise started again.

went to a garage who took it for a road test and as they accelerated past 40 the noise came again with serious black smoke.

They checked the oil and there was about 5L too much!

I filled it myself a few months ago and it was dead on!

Really not sure whats going on here

does anyone have any ideas?

Bought the car from a seller 6 months ago who said it was 'perfect condition' and now this! (even though i've somehow managed to get quite attached to it)

Many thanks

Alastair

Yep, diesel is leaking into the oil, possibly not firing on a cylinder and washed it out, might be a cracked head allowing diesel straight into the oilways (I suspect the first one tho). You need to get it compression checked before you do owt else, that will start the fault finding process...

change the injector washers and seals, use genuine ones, cheap to buy,,
drain oil and put fresh in, then monitor oil level, if it stays at same level, head is prob ok, injector seals can make it run rough

thanks for your input.

when you say 'run rough' would this be RPM dependent? when I drove to the garage today car was absolutely fine (top speed of around 25). It was only when they drove to the motorway that they experienced the problems.

can be any rpm, from starting badly, to cutting out, missfires etc

Seals and injector washers not a big job on td5 but closely monitor oil level afterwards. Ive had to change 2 heads on td5's replacing them with turner replacements after cracks in originals.

Thanks for all your input!

Turns out it was either failed injector seals or a cracked cylinder head. Seals were changed and now there is still fuel leaking into the oil sump!

Looks like may need to replace the cylinder head now (unless it could be anything else??)

Can anyone recommend the best place to get a replacement from? Had no idea how expensive they are!

MAny thanks

Alastair
