Slightly different, mines a late 2a hard top ( currently restoring ) with the square type heater and once I've cleaned the heater matrix out and fitted I plan on fitting a rear heater aswell probably use one of those new round type jobbies but on a separate switch so if it gets too hot with both on I can switch one off :)
 
My 2A has a Smiths square heater as its ex-mil. I've lived with it being poor for a few years but last week I decided to take it apart with a view to fitting a modern fan. What I found inside was a 2 speed resistor wired in parralled (which explained the current draw) and a mass of dog fur (a previous owner was a dog breader). Now with he fan lubed, the matrix cleaned and good wiring it pumps out loads of heat so my upgrade plan has been ditched. I also have a taxi heater in the rear.
 
Yeah I've heard good things and bad things with the square type heater, my 2a was an unroad worthy runner when I bought it so couldn't really test it and I've never had the square type heater before been used to the old useless round type and or the useless S3 heater's so I'm hoping the square type heater will be ok and I have heard that these newer smiths copies are better than the smiths round type which I'm hoping to fit in the back when I get to fitting the tub :)

I have had success by fitting an auxiliary pump to the heater circuit- and it seems to have cured overheating.
I posted some pictures last year.
 
Its the position of the air intake on the S3 that causes the prob....the fan just cant pull the air in at speed.

I re-positioned the air intake to the front grill with duct pipe so I now get a ram air fed heater unit...even with my soft top on this time of year its toasty.

The side entry will just never be any good...its in a low pressure area.

You need a NACA duct, would look good too. As they are effectively half a divergent duct they generate pressure as the speed increases.
