Hi Folks i originally posted in hte series forum, and had some really good advice. But i was wondering if anyone can help with the problem.

I have a series 3 which had 2.25 diesel in it that died shortly after i bought it ( for my better half). i am fitting a 19j ( earlier version sadly) but repalcing the pistons hot spots bottom end bearings etc. i have fitted an electric fan to get it in.

My question is we would like it to last and I am wary of the reputation of this engine. Does a 19j normally have an oil cooler? if so will I need to add this and if so any advice on what to fit and how to go about it would be very gratefully received,and also other advice to get some longevity out of the engine. Its not going to be worked especially hard.

Yes it does, it is in the radiator.
The reason why 19j's blow up is because people don't think they need oil coolers.

Where are you?

You have two options, a 19j radiator or an aftermarket oil cooler.

The feed and return comes from the oil filter housing, the feed has a thermostat in it erc5923, you might also want to change that.

I would also get a gauge to monitor oil temperature prc4372 which fits in place of etc4021 (don't know the pn for gauges but I can find out if you need them) and oil pressure which is a bit more complicated , prc4043 oil pressure transmitter , afu1887l joint washer , etc4033 adaptor - oil pressure switch and etc4034 banjo-oil pressure switch.

As with any turbo engine monitoring the oil temperature is a good idea as the turbo will heat the oil and without cooling it will get very hot.
19J's will plod on forever but they need careful looking after, especially the cooling systems.

You might get away with one of these, although I don't know about compatibility, the TD oil cooler is integral to the radiator so it wont cool the oil as much as the water in the rad will be hot anyway.

I did this conversion in a 109 I had a few years ago. I had the engine lying around and the sherpa lump that was in it had died so it was an easy decision. I used the original 109 rad and didn't fit an oil cooler. It absolutely tranformed the 109 I would do it again today. I knocked up a side exit exhaust and ran a K&N type air filter and heads used to turn when the turbo span up it was brilliant. I ran it for about 18 months with no problems and the bloke I sold it to is still running it with no problems. The engine was out of a 1990 110 and had done about 130k.

....any benefit in fitting the full tdi frame rad and intercooler so you are not only cooling the oil but cooling the intake charge aswell? Am I correct in thinking the 19j didn't have an intercooler?

...hopefully someone will be along who will be more qualified than me to confirm or not the suitability of such an idea

The 19j suffers from heat stress and pistons crack as a result, cool oil is injected up under the pistons, I wouldn't run one without a cooler.

I think an intercooler will bring up the combustion temps, I doubt it would give you much benefit if you did chance it.

Intercooler will lower the inlet air temprature .....thats its job (Clues in the title ;-) )

To be honest the 19j is a boat anchor of a thing ....you can spend a fortune on one and it'll still go titsy .
Not one of landrovers best designs by far ...They "breathe" like an old age pensioner on 40 a day capstan full strength .
Crack pistons for fun ...

Just throw it away and fit a 200 TDi instead .

My 109 SW yas one ....it's coming out in favour of a 300TDi ,I'd have gone 200TDi ideally as it's a simpler almost drop in fit BUT
I already have a 300 AND the engine mounts have already been chopped to fit the boat anchor .

Yes it will , but at around 1200f will it cool the combustion chamber enough to counteract the ''bigger bang'' created by the denser air?

The Effect would be negligible as the 19j runs low boost pressure A friend of mine spent a small fortune fitting an allisport custom intercooler to his 19j and got a reduction in the EGTs ...cooler charger air = cooler combustion and lower EGT
BUT the 19j still expired shortly after with cracked pistons .

It doesnt really matter what you do ....the 19j will expire shortly anyway lol ....

Some of them were crap from new ...some were ok...ish when new BUT the survivors will pretty much all have large mileages on them by now .

Part of the problem is that most will have been treated like a 2 1/4 (and we all know just how much one of those will take )

The same issue with the 2 .6 pot petrols ...basically a Rover car engine that would have (When fitted to a p4 Rover etc ) been serviced and cosseted ...
However when fitted into a series Landrover ....most got treated like a Landrover .

I think you are being harsh on the 19j, it wasn't a great engine by any standards but it wasn't bad either, cracked pistons were usually down to heat stress caused by poor maintenance or driving it like a loon. My last 19j , an early one had 3 cracked pistons but you would never have guessed, they weren't too badly cracked but the thing ran like a sewing machine. Oil in the filter was a bit of a give away.
They will plod along until they eventually fall apart, bang for buck, providing you get one that's been looked after you cant really beat them.

It's Called a TDi

Fair enough IF youve got a 90/110 with a 19j in it and you cannot be arsed swapping it for a proper engine .

I'd not bother ACTUALLY fitting a 19j to anything other than a boat on the end of a long length of chain .

Certainly not a series when there is a much better,more reliable AND easier to fit option

A 200 TDI isn't that much more of an engine, OK , so it is , but they have their problems too.
But then again there are far better options out there than TDI's, lots of none Land Rover engines, so if I was to go to the bother of fitting a different engine I'd probably be looking for something that didn't sport the green oval logo.

In my 110 the 19j was underpowered and stressed but the very same engine in the lower geared 109 was fantastic. Slightly lighter vehicle and lower gearing made all the difference.

The 19J is not a bad engine by any means. Ok, so other engines are more powerful and fuel-efficient, but then they're also newer designs so that's to be expected. They can be reliable as long as they're maintained properly and you don't thrash it about everywhere. They are somewhat underpowered in a 90 or 110, but in a lighter series they should be absolutely fine. A tdi will make is quicker but then you're still on the series brakes (and how fast do you really want to go anyway.)

Bearing in mind that 200tdi were not the faultless wonder engine they're assumed to be, plus that decent low-mileage ones are getting harder to find as the supply of dead discos dries up and the engines get older, I'd personally hesitate to fit one to a series.
