Hi all.
I'm in Kenya, restoring a number of vehicles including my series 11a. There's no speedo cable, so I bought one and set about fitting it, but when looking for the drive all I can find is what looks like a blanking plate fixed by two slotted screws behind the handbrake drum. One of the screws is inaccessible. Is the drive? Do I need to replace this plat with something? Its just got a small hole in the centre.
Also, the alternator has wires diectly connected inside ( no plug/socket or even cover, and the charging light stays on. Its charging but shouldn't that light go out when the engine is running?

The speedo cable is held in place by the plate,and if I remember right a new plate would be on the cable for a series two,series three had it held on with a plastic clip.

Thanks for that. Does the centre cable go throught the plate and the outer is somehow held on the plate?

As I recall the plate is free to slide along the cable.It may be that what you see on your box is what is left of the original cable end still held in place by its plate.You need to remove both screws [ long shank driver handy] to get it out.

The flange on the cable has three fixing screws. The two screw flange on the gearbox is the top of the drive I think.

Yes you are right Bobsticle,the two large screws hold the drive gear in place,the three smal screw hold the cable and ar a bit of a fiddle to get in.Youns must be missing Brian.

Thanks to you both. The new cable arrived without the loose flange with three holes, but in the meantime, I found a small threaded hole which had filled with Kenyan dirt, I'll look for two more and fashion a suitable fixing plate. Thanks again.
Now back to my p38 door electrics problems and if thats successful, I have lots to do on my FJ40.
