is it a dvd reader i need??
Depends on version and year....

The earlier ones were CD based, the newer are DVD based....

Open the boot and on the right hand side will be the SatNav brains....take it out and check the model number and any other references, this should give you something to go on....

Mark 1,2 and 3 systems are cd based, mark 4 is DVD. You are most likely to have a mk 2 although if you have you can use a mk2 or 3 unit. Mk 4s can be recognised by DVD on the front.

REmember satnavs 10+ years ago were pretty basic. Discs will be well out of date and expensive to replace. The one in my 2001 works but never gets used, google navigation on my phone is a million percent better. Save your money you will need it for something else on a P38 soon enough

I wouldn't agree with you on that DiscoMalc,
I've got a 2001 RR and No it doesn't have 3D graphics and some of the latest features of the modern SatNav's but after getting new disks (UK & French) it now has the latest maps and works very well. They cost around £40 for both of them.
I've never liked having things stuck to the windscreen or dashboard with wires hanging all over the place...
