+1 to the above - the older RF units were prone to interference causing a battery drain, the simple fix was to remove the blue aerial wire....only as you have found, this can have other issues....
Best to replace with the newest version - as mentioned not cheap but worth it...and don't get one from the Bay of E.....as they have been known to be old guts in a new box...Island4x4 are probably the best place (no affliation)
