The key is to find out why the identity was changed. If you can find the orginal ID and confirm it was not a stolen vehicle then you could get a real bargain and end up with a nice straight S3. The problem is that at some stage a complete road worthy S3 was disguised as another vehicle. There are honest reasons but not many. One option is that it was stolen and paid up on insurence, in which case it belongs to the insurence company, but if you get that far you may find you can buy it off them for a low price and get it back to being legit without much effort.

This is getting more and more interesting. Not 100% that everything he tells me is true.

It’s imported to Sweden from Denmark 2003 and he had a S2a that was so bad that he sold it for parts and used the vin and rego on the S3. Does sound a bit strange but people do strange things

That’s very common in the UK. Unfortunately it’s also illegal.
 
Its also not unknown for stolen vehicles to shipped across to another country then have their identity changed.
 
my brother had years of fun trying to register his S2 in Europe- dumb irons had been changed but no chassis number
