Hi, everyone, just joined Landyzone. Had 2 series 2's and a Rangerover before. Just got a Discovery 3.9V8 '97 and having a few problems. When empty, if I put fuel in, the engine stalls 4 or 5 times afterwards when slow down then afterwards it's O.K. Also on tickover there's a high pitched noise from the engine which stops over about 800 revs. Can anyone help, please?

That sounds very much like a big air leak IN to the inlet manifold somewhere.

You hear it most at low reves for two reasons, (1) the engine is running quietly and (2) on tick over the manifold vacuum is at its greatest and so it sucks most.

Could be a vacuum pipe to the servo, or the servo itself, but it sure sounds like a inlet air suck to me.

Hi, thanks CharlesY will check it out. Sounds very probable. Have just replaced air filter. and a pipe from something was hanging off. Came from near the throttle cable and looked like it came from behind screen washer bottle at the other end so I put it back.

Have someone stand at the back of the vehicle and spray wd40 or CRC near the offending area and watch for the smoke out of the exhaust. That will tell you if and where there is an air inlet leak.

Hi Jack, thanks for replying but I'm not sure I understand. If there's a leak in the inlet manifold how can spraying wd40 on the exhaust tell you?

No..spray wd40 on the engine near where the sucking sound is and then have someone LOOK at the exhaust, smoke will come out from the burnt wd40. :):)

When I replaced air filter I'd forgot to put the breather hose back (right hand side on top cover) Also noticed pipe to actuator by accelarator mechanism was split badly where it was pushed on. Sorted this and tickover seems OK now. Had a few beers so couldn't do a test drive. Try tomorrow. Many thanks for your help. Michael
