I was driving back from somewhere earlier when the the display flashed up with 'oil pressure' the range said 44mls. I checked the oil level and went and got a jerry can and some petrol. It started up ok-ish. I then drove to the garage and put a further £20 in however the range or fuel gauge hasn't moved up at all. It also judders sometimes when giving it some gas.

44 miles on the range and it run dry ??? :confused:

probably had fuel left, but all the old dirty fuel.

how often do you let your fuel go down before re-filling >?
 
Do you use supermarket fuel? The about of additives and lack of refining on these fuels with constant use will require you to maintain your fuel system regularly...tank flushes (esp on diesels) and filters.

Suggest, as said, changing filter (and examine the old one to see) and running redex through it for 1000 miles or so. If the car is high mileage, kept outside, run on supermarket fuel, then consider flushing your tank to. You'd be surprised at the crud/ that's in the bottom just from fuel pumps. Get a dip kit to if the problems on going to see how much water (leak or condensation) is in there.

Given the oil pressure message and the other problems, it might be worth checking the battery and alternator. Low voltage causes all sorts of funnies.
