Is this rumble noise normal? If it wasn't a 4x4 I'd guess the bearings were shot but as it is a permanent driver 4x4 (and the first one I've had) I've no idea. It matches tyre/propshaft revolutions but I'm pretty sure it isn't tyres. There's no vibration with it...

Try to ignore the tinny rattle from behind the dash - that's next on the list

Wouldn't you normally feel vibration with props?
Had a similar thing with mine & conviced it was propshaft again. New front tyres this afternoon & all is smooth, amazing how part worn tyres have such a big effect.

No, it's quieter in the video than real life. It does disapear at 70 - or at least it's masked.

I'll check the tyres then for tread/wear/damage.

Done the rear one but couldn't find a nipple on the front one anywhere!

FWIW, glad Martyn and Saint said tyres as I decided I'd rotate them and one was loose. As in the wheel nuts could actually be turned by hand!! Could have worked loose on a long run with disastorous consequences I guess!

But it didn't fix the rumble!! Go figure!

There are 3 nipples on the front prop, the 2 UJ's and the sliding section

+1 for tyres, had almost identical rumble and changed the front tyres. I'll post some pics of the before and after tyres when i get chance.

The 'before' tyre on the NSF had nasty shoulder burn, so you can imagine the profile/shape of the tyre. When the new ones were put on it not only got rid of the the rumble but the ride was more comfortable and steering control sharper. It is amazing how the shape of a tyre can affect the ride.

You can get ones without nipples. If the uj s are making that noise they are fooked any way.

Deffo doesn't have any on the front one - which looks quite new.

How do you maintain/grease one if it doesn't have any?

Throw some grease at it (a good handful) and what sticks is the right ammount!

Ok, seems the UJ does/did have a grease nipple but its missing. Can't tell if its snapped or missing.

SNAPPED!! They usually lever against the nipple when they replace propshaft bolts.

Anyway, got it out. Unscrewed one from the rear, put it in the front and greased the front (I'd already done the rear). I then blanked off the hole in the rear until I get a replacement nipple.

Anyway, didn't make any difference to the noise. But at least its another job ticked off...

I spelt it wrong....

They have a reverse thread on and they cut into the stuck bit and as it is a reverse thread, as you thrun to screw the tool in, it in turn, screws the stuck bit out....
