Evening all

I have taken out the inner wheel arch liners in the front of my D1 300Tdi as I was Dinitrol'ing it.

Mine has the 'through draft option' fitted which allows air/water to enter the engine compartment through where metal once was

So I was going to weld in new inner wings and then wondered if anyone had seen (to buy) or made a rubber insert to protect the inner wings.

I was looking a 1mm, 2mm or 3mm rubber sheeting on fleabay and wondered if I could fix that underneath instead. I have treated and protected the current (remaining) and the rubber should go some way to helping there

Do not cover the metalwork.

Avoid sill trims, Rocksliders, boot carpets, etc etc.

Obviously sometimes you have to cover up, but basically the rot starts when the mud/water cannot dry out.

Factory fit arch liners are where the rot starts. Factory fit sill trims. Factory fit sound deadening. Boot carpets. Rear arch rubber strip. Plastic panel on top of rear crossmember.

Remove them all before it's too late!

If you bought a new d1 and removed everything so it could breathe every time it got wet it would last 20 years without welding.

Thanks for the reply - was of mixed thoughts on the issue. Just seems like a battle between protecting the inner wheel arches and from damage from stones and from rust.

Guess I will have to get a welder and some replacement parts from LRM (?) and sort it in the spring
