Only aerials that come up for RRC 1986 - 1994 on LRcat are wing mounted. PRC4336 up to CA274120, AMR3418 after.
My 1986 has that type & when I bought it in 1994 was still fitted with the Land Rover factory fit Clarion radio/cassette player.
Probable that a roof mount is aftermarket. Photo might help, otherwise a specialist ICE dealer might be able to shed some light.

it has a VIN starting with DA like mine maybe, which was when the aerial was incorporated into the rear screen alongside the heating element. Item 3 on my parts book page.

Thanks for the responses and information. I saw from the Parts Catalogue that the only aerial options were a post or through the rear screen element but I find it hard to believe that, if there had been a problem with the screen element aerial, LR would have gone to the trouble of installing a roof aerial which would necessitate moving the headlining rather than just replace the upper tailgate.
I think its after market as well, my 89 used the rear screen and radio would at times cut out depending on location, roof aerial always give the best reception no matter which way the car is facing regards the transmitter years ago Renault always advised fitting a roof aerial when fitting a radio for best results thats before they came as standard plus you had to have a licence for it, who remembers that I wonder.
Perhaps they decided to just fit a roof aerial instead of another upper tailgate due to poor performance?
Doesn't look like LR were happy with the HRW element as an aerial as they didn't use it in the P38
Mine had the wiring for a phone fitted - removed before I bought it but going by the screw holes it would have been one of the mahoosive early ones & that had had a roof aerial fitted at the rear of the roof in much the same position as yours.
I left it in place but eventually started to leak so I removed it & sealed the hole - easy enough to just disengage the rear of the headlining & access it.
I subsequently resprayed the roof & dealt with the hole so the roof now looks as though it never had a hole in it.

It doesn’t. There’s an amplifier above the rear head lining that is linked to the head unit via the co-ax cable.
