In process of changing my 01 disco to either a 07 big body or a 07 sport. It will be a second car mainly for wife. Wondering which will be more reliable and less risky for long term running! Is there a big improvement in the 3.6dsl RR model that was introduced on 07? Both look very clean and have similar mileage - around 88k. And help or advice would be appreciated.

All RRs suffered from too much engine for the gearbox. They made big steps towards runout for the L322 but still too much engine.

If you buy a sport all you're doing is saying "I wish I could afford a proper RR", get full fat and be happy.

Only RR L322 gearbox that we have much trouble with is the GM 5L40 in the early straight 6

Not true. The boxes got slightly stronger and the GM was the worst, but they still put in too much engine for the gearbox. Biggest problem was caused by "Sealed for life."

Well not true you say, I work at a main dealer and I was just noting that we don't change many auto's, certainly not enough to say there is an issue. I see ZF do the 8 speed in various ratings up too 1000nm.

What you call sealed for life trouble is on the zf boxes in rrs and d3 (and jag) is caused by glycol contamination
The x5 is free of this problem

Owl, is there a difference in maintaining in relation to cost? Love the big one but a bit nervous about major issues that will kill the fun of owning, rgds John

I tried them both and found the ride far superior in the rrs for handling. Feels very nimble and planted in the road. so I bought one :)

Comes down to personal preference I suppose. Both are great tho.

Well same engine (TDV8) and trans but different suspension. We seem to do more work on the RRS, Disco suspension, ball joints and bushes etc plus more wheel bearings on sport and disco. having said that our hourly rate is more on RR so prob about the same. Personally I like the D4, awesome car especially like the 3 ltr engine.
Some of the late RR's with the big brakes are £1,000 for disc's and pads so ask the dealer about costs.
I would say by the one that suits you best and take out extended warranty.
We had one in recently 14K for a new engine customer had missed a service so no good will and he didn't have extended warranty either but even thats no good without complete service history.

Don't matter what car it is if you don't service it and don't put oil in it will fail.
Believe it or not proper servicing makes a huge difference to reliability.

in my opinion id go for the tdv8 rangerover i find that sports are for people going through a mid life crisis and want to be young again i also find the tdv6 a disapointment every time i drive one there slow and noisey tdv8 is strong pulls like a train and sounds brilliant the only sport i would have is 10my on the cross over with a tdv8 with flappy padal gearbox brilliant car to drive holds the roads brilliant just my 2 pence worth

cheers mike

so why did a 14k engine fail then .....are you saying it used all the oil in the sump between service and its the customers fault?

do you work at stratstone in nottingham? or hunters?
