New here not new to the brand, long story (been in Landcruiser for 4 years, Range rovers before that - a V8 Classic and a damned awful bucket of problems otherwise known as a P38), time enough.

Well now in a 2004 model Disco 2 TD5 ES and spending a fortune sorting out the mess the previous owners left - a trail of cheapskate or no maintenance.

Tons of places where pipes are chaffed and rubbing that needed sorting, Lots of oil in the induction system traced to the turbo, corrosion in the chassis at the rear (not bad yet but not long for this world if not addressed), rear lights in bumper full of water and people wonder why these 'cars' become unreliable .... got it for a good price so wasn't expecting miracles ..

So far oil, filters and rotor changed twice now and it finally is staying clean, steering box replaced, brake fluid replaced, all fluids and filters replaced basically, thermostat, auxilliary belt and idler replaced, injector harness replaced along with cam cover gasket, MAF and MAP sensors sorted, exhaust manifold refaced I had a boss for an exhaust gas temperature probe installed before the flange, refitted with Wurth studs and nuts fitted, Lumenition EGT unit installed. Car is now de EGR'd and de Catted - also de centre boxed, was also a guttless pig still so had Mike from Dynachip give it a workover - better but still not even a match for our 2.0 Passat. Garbage Landrover/Becker navigation also ditched in favour of a Clarion 501e, rear lights replaced, did I mention 5 new 18" Grabber AT tyres too.

Plans now to replace crank pulley / damper, can't stop oil drain plug leaking, leak high up on back of engine (oil not diesel), leak between transfer case and gearbox - on top somewhere, turbo is getting replaced with a Turbo Technics VNT (play in spindle), TD5Alive booster box and an Allard intercooler is also going in (already all bought) I'll do the crank pulley while radiator is out and the water pump is getting replaced while the Turbo is being done. Hopefully that puts the car into some sort of order.

Welcome to Landrover ... ... and bankruptcy .... I'm a sucker for basket cases I guess. So much of what I have found as the owner could not easily have been detected as the buyer.

Yo, I have a slightly sick sense of humour and the skin in of a Rhino up to a point will that do ...

Know my way around a spanner alright, may be too much so since I find ways to spend money that many owners wouldn't spot until they were sat on the hard shoulder ... I don't do the break down due to cheap or shoddy maintenance thing.

The car is a late 03 and I paid 5k with a 12 month ticket (which based on the play and leaking steering it should have failed) and 6 months tax so I expected 'issues'

I have zero plans for major off roading at this point (did all that with the Range Rover) the car is basically a tow horse but needs to be able to drag a 3 ton trailer around and often on grass.

I see you got one of thee good ones then there are a few bad ones about you know ps I love my expensive to correct p38 I will have you know enjoy you love it really don't you .....

4 years with a landcruiser and not a mark on the driveway, 4 months with a Landrover and now little dark spots everywhere. Now trying to turn a bad one into a good one ... not the task for a tight budget regrettably. The jury is out on whether I love it.

As for the P38 - Lucas prince of Darkness - airbags - suspension - ABS ... oh I loved my p38 to bits - actually nearly every weekend it was in bits ... car drove me crazy :dizzy:

I'd be worried if it dint do that, cos that would mean there's no oil in it at all

I wouldn't mind if it didn't cost so much to put in there in the first place - I spent over £185 on oils and fluids in the first two weeks of ownership ...

buy a good set of metal trays and place them strategically under the Landy

then tip into a container and return to the aforementioned beasty for the day

I did replace all the fluids - didn't lose it all to leakage

I'm going to do the tray thing for now but intend to stop all leaks - I know this is perhaps an unrealistic intention with Solihulls finest

Good luck, sounds like you'll need it. Great machine is a Land Rover; when they're running

I'll be content to reduce the number of drips but you've got to have a target - if only some of the fixes weren't such a pain in the hole - I am passed the days when juggling transfer boxes etc over my head is on the agenda (and I have done it in the past). Just picking off the issues one by one - hopefully I can delete them faster than I get new ones.
