I feel your pain but am resigined to the new rates (unless they have some kind of backtrack and delay it for a year or two - fingers crossed).
Going down the 6 and 12 month tax route it's avoidable for nearly two years depending on when it falls, and then it's "only" another 200 quid - far less than cost of replacing the car.
I love the car and I need a 4x4 so no choice really. I will go for a post 2009 manual Freelander 2 when this one dies as they tax is pretty decent and they are brining in new technology to lower emissions. Still be a 175g but get it into the cheaper bands.
I have a feeling they are going to clobber G+ cars even worse in the future.
