I have a p38 range rover diesel 2.5 auto 1998 here goes I was driving on m25 when I heard like a little backfire noise then lost all power rev counter stopped working so has cruise I pulled up engine still running but revs are High I have drove the car home no overheating just flat on power I have now changed injector pump still running the same also engine puffs blue smoke until you drive it down the road then it clears ideas anyone

Diagnostics would have been a good idea before spending on a new FIP.
EGR valve is a possibility if yours has one.

It didn't have one fitted when I bought it I'm wondering if the pump is out on the timing chain

Only thing that would give high RPM at idle is throttle pot malfunction (not dropping below 9%) or quantity servo sticking or CPS malfunction. All should show on diagnostics. Favourite is CPS sensor. Static timing will certainly not give that problem.

I have changed crank sensor today and it is still the same maybe worse as I couldn't get it to start it does fire if you try easy start so I assume you were right about timing one thing I have noticed is that if you take the top of the injector pump off there is a kind like throttle arm which opens the pump for more fuel when the car ran okay it used to flick to full throttle very quickly then return to tick over position this happens before you turn the engine over now it does not move as if it is missing a signal somewhere hope you can understand what I mean ps there is fuel at the injectors as well

That is the fuel quantity servo. Not a thing to flick about and play with. It has potentiometers on it to tell ECU where it is. If that has failed it's a new pump. You need this on diagnostics first though i would have thought. May just be a broken wire or a wet ECU. If you don't know what you are doing you should not play with the injection pump. Have you moved the centre section? :);)

+1

OMG

When I fitted the engine I had to use the top of the pump from the range rover I fitted it to the new engine and it worked fine I had been using the for 4 months with no problems do think it could be the top of the pump has stopped working then

How did you fit it? You have to set it to idle at 750 RPM with engine at normal temp. You cannot just slap it on. If you just slapped it on and the engine ran you were very lucky indeed. Does sound like quantity servo has failed so it is either a new centre section fitted properly or a new pump.

Hi all I've changed the injector pump today and it still hasn't cured it and also the heater plug light isn't coming on and the pump in the isn't working as well I've checked fuses and they are all okay any more suggestions anyone please getting fed up with it now

How did you time the injection pump? Glow lamps are a function controlled initially by the ECU temperature sender readings via the ECU. That could also cause bad running if duff. Which pump is not running the lift pump? It will only come on with glow lamps or when engine is running if car is pre 1999. On cranking after that year. You shouldn't play if you don't know what you are doing.

It's the pump in the tank that isn't working I just fitted the injector pump by lining it up with the jetway on the pump shaft it does try to fire if I spray easy start down the inlet the pump in the tank used to come on when I first turned the ignition on then it would stop after it had pumped fuel up

Of course it tries to start on easy start, its running on it!!! If you use to much you will break your piston rings.
