Hi gents

Am new to forum I've bought a n reg 300tdi disco to tow my caravan but the wife used it last week and my engine toasted on mway. Anyway I've removed the head and the piston has smashed into bits so I've bought a new / used engine, today I have managed to remove all ancillary but am struggling to remove top bolt from engine which connects to bellhousing just above starter motor, both myself and farther have tryied accessing from gear stick internally but with no success the light diminished on us so we have to end there.

We are going to try again tomorrow by removing both engine with gearbox together which is causing me some issues.

One is will our 1100kg engine hoist (borrowed) take the weight.
Two is this the only way to remove ? Surely there is a easy way to go.

Please help I am about to throw this car towards the scrap yard along with my dad in it thank you in advance.

surley they will come out together with radiator and grill removed? theres loads of room. And yes your 1100kg crane should lift it now trouble.

Any more tips ?
yeh, swear a lot while doing it,
and have a box of plasters ready.

fraid its one of them jobs I never done on a landy,
but 100`s of times during my lifetime.

the best bit is when you`ve done it,
then you can advise others like me on what not to do while doing it

Youll be lucky if they come out in a oner :)

I rekon youd have to raise the front to allow the gearbox to swing round as itll hit the ground before it comes round ....and its fecking heavy. Did a RRC 3.9 in one go but the landing panel was off but you cant do that on a disco.

2 ways to get to the said bolts....
take the weight of the engine with your hoist, remove the mountings from the engine block, lower the engine down to get to bolt.

or

lower gearbox and use loooooong extensions to get to it.

Id go for the engine lower way as your taking it out anyway

Ill add.... dont put it back in :) makes it easy for the next time.

:rolleyes:Ignore the following, I didn't read that it was disco, cant clear slam panel doing it like defender

Support gearbox under Handbrake drum on a jack, remove mounts from chassis (long bolts) remove centre crossmember.

After undoing all stuff to take engine out including earth straps drop gearbox onto a skate board or leave on trolly jack so it will roll forward when lifting engine.

Lift engine taking the weight at the front so the engine comes up and the gearbox stays on the trolly jack, drag it out until the gearbox clears the tunnel,

Let the engine down to rest on the front crossmember (rad etc is out of course) so as engine and gearbox is level.

Then strap the handbrake drum to the hoist so as when you jack it up it stays level, the fan will rest against the hoist but just pull the lot out then and bobs yer uncle.

put it back the same way only opposite if you know what I mean:)
