I have been told that you can do this but I cannot see how you would get it past the roof rails. Any ideas?

Yep it can be done - I have done it but it's a real struggle and you need two people.

You can carefully lift it far enough to clear the latches and take it out the side of the vehicle.

I have done it as well on our first Freelander many years ago, as said above its fine if you have two people

As they have said, but it's only 4 bolts to take the bars off

But often 4 rusty bolts! But yes it's an easy job to take the rails off.
