Anyone got a working method for removing Suzuki decals off '89 vintage
SJ please? The last one I cleaned up was older and they came off
easily with a heat gun. These, on a Samurai, seem to be much tougher
and have an adhesive that remains even when the decal film is prised
off.

Is there a magic solvent that works? What do bodyshops use?

3M make a rubber wheel that removes decals. It leaves the paint untouched
(unless to generate too much heat) and looks like a kid has gone over it
with a pencil rubber. It fits in a drill and simply spins off the plastic
bits.

Try Panel wipe or Spirit wipe, if your on a tight budget a good rub with a
petrol rag will remove the old glue.

I got them off my 1988 SJ410 by heating a corner with a hairdryer until
it was soft, then peeling it back while still applying the heat. It's
tricky because if you let it cool down it breaks off, and if you get it
too hot it tears. Plus you need strong fingernails!

I got the glue off afterwards with white spirit. It took me a whole day
to get it all off.

Just get a 3M decal remover, it is the most simple tool to use. Bolt it
into a drill and rub them off. It too me 5 minutes to remove the pinstripes
down both sides of a Golf. I know that isn't a large area, but I bet you
couldn't do it any quicker any other way.

Go to a paint shop supply company, the place they sell the paint and ask for
a decal removing disk or maybe, if you're lucky, a motor supply company,
although they will be more expensive. If I hadn't have just moved and still
have everything boxed up I would get you the part number.

That is the exact tool. You will be very happy with it. Just use white
spirit or a car polish to get the rubber off afterwards.
