I've been given a 95 M reg 300TDi which comes with keys but no remote for the central locking. I've been looking to replace the remote and the previous owner said it should be a single button one, is that correct?

TIA :)

Yes, if it was a two button fob u wouldn't be able to start the engine without it, unless there's been a few "mods" done to the security system.
There's info on single button fobs if you search.

If you are after a replacement fob make sure you get the right one - 418mhz or 433mhz.

It is most likely to be 433 which are difficult to find. Look at Remote Key

mines a 95 m reg and my fobs a single button which as stated above are difficult to find,if you look on the ecu which is situated under glove box(passenger side) it should tell you what mhz it will be,but there is different colour circuit boards inside the fob but i think they all work,as long as mhz corresponds,my first fob packed in so bought another off ebay circuit boards are different colours programmed new fob in and it worked havent tried old fob yet.hope this helps

Coloured PCBs are just a manufacturing thing, just as long as the frequency is the same.

Had the same problem mate just went to ebay and bought a keyless entry kit £20 comes with two fobs and soo easy to wire up much better range that landrover system and much much easyer and cheaper than getting new key fob and re programming it failing that keep you eyes open for secondhand central locking ecu with fob
