I read somewhere about someone relocating there expansion tank nearer the bulkhead possibly to where the washer bottle is to raise it up a bit reducing the risk of air getting trapped elsewhere in the system.

Has anyone seen this, think it’s a good idea? Or would I be better just fitting a cap with a switch?

no, fit brass plugs in thermostat housing and rad and check level there ,rad is weakest point in that fins rot out or core dosent cool over entire surface check regulary by hand
