Ive done three in the past seem to remember having to lay it on its side to slide it sideways, did you find the spot welds right in the corner under the floor, have to cut floor into corner and peel it up to get at them or was it my bad luck to have some there.
 
As Kds says they slide out sideways well mine fell out in three bits but the new one had to go back in sideways.
 
Well, finally got it out, after bending the n/s end down and twisting it out over the chassis, it certainly made a difference by removing the rivets on the floor as well :eek: just need to clean up the space and fit the new one

You might need to drill a small hole near each hinge pin to take the ends of the torsion bar that helps lift lower tail gate if its not already there otherwise the tail gate wont drop right down. Last one I did was my own 89 classic.

why can't ALL towbar brace bars be the same length/shape :eek:, as I have spent most of the day trying to remove 2 old braces as they will not fit on the replacement towbar bracket that I am fitting :confused::confused:
 
lol I dont know , cos its british probs lol. btw my bolts were too long and nut side up too lol. I put them back the same way- if it aint broke lol
 
Re the torsion bars, no you dont have to refit them but after running a 75 two door that didnt have them for 13 years it was nice to be able to shut lower tailgate with one hand when I got 89 four door , just my thoughts on it. Good to see you are getting there with it.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys, I did eventually put the torsion bars back, coated most of the inner rear chassis with waxoyl, and gave the outside a generous coat of POR-15, so it should last a few more years yet ;)

finally got all the towbar fitted and painted, just needs wiring up, then the job of replacing all the other parts begins......
... then it will be back out on the road, good as new :D
