well seem to be a bit of a regular on here..

i am looking to change out the rear bushes on my 2004 , 4.4 v8 vogue , 109K, (thats not miles thats how much it owes me...) as i have play in the lower bushes and was thinking of a bit of an overhaul.

i have priced it up to replace all the highlighted items with genuine or oem parts and its over £300 but the option is much cheaper ****part bits but didnt want to be doing the job again.

i suppose my question is are there any problems or pitfalls to look out for and are there parts highlighted on the attached list that don't usually fail that i could be wasting money on?

Its all in a cradle isn't it? Lower and remove kit and caboodle, plonk it on kitchen table under the strip light, then you'll be close to the kettle....lol

Its only bushes, nothing a large vice or 10 tn bench press can't handle, just observe any orientation quirks in the bushes, i.e. void bushes will have more meaty rubber for compression forces etc.. and never fully tighen arms until on car in normal heaight setting. Easy peezy lemon squeezy, p.s. Use new stretch bolts where applicable.
 
Never done the rears but done the fronts on a couple so should not be too dissimilar, on the front, decent bushes have a small arrow moulded in on the ones which need orientation to align with corresponding point on housing (**** part don't have it) there is also a method to torque up the bolts, think you need to lower the car and have the vehicle weight on the suspension first, cant quite remember as did my LR 3 fronts last which has to driven before torqueing IIRC? but should all be in RAVE. Just my two penneth worth!
 
thanks men, i think i might just change the upper and lower bushes on the hub rather than the complete set as it would be much cheaper and easier to do and i think the bush that was showing wear was the lower one on the hub.

there is a ****part kit on ebay that lists the upper and lower bushes and relevant nuts bolts and washers which would imply that they are the most common bits changed although i would stick with the oem / genuine parts.

see what loony has to say as its mostly his spanners that do the work

stand by.....
 
On a 2.5 tonne Range Rover, I'd prefer to see/use OEM parts....but I understand at times budgets dictate otherwise.....

And yes, the weight of the vehicle needs to be on the suspension at the final tighten to ensure correct alignment - this is difficult at home due to lack of access, which is where a ramp is handy.

It can be done if you are carefull with a jack under the lower wishbone with some wood to spread the load, then lift to compress the suspension - but always ensure stability and you have stands under the chassis as a precaution.
 
Upper and lower hub rose joints are generally at fault they can be done on the car by doing one at a time, the official land rover tool is a threaded bar and pressing cups with ball race nuts to extract and refit the bushes , most of the time they get knocked out with a hamme and cleaned with a bit of emery paper grease the new unit and draw then in with the tool. Hope it helps you a little bit
 
My man with the spanners wants to hold fire until we get some better weather which is ok, I'll definitely go with the oem when it comes to it

changed all the hub ones on mine for britpart ones earlier this year did it myself with 2 jacks
2 axle stands and a bush removal/press kit off ebay and some decent sized breaker bars, took a few hours but it isn't too hard
the top ones control the camber of the rears so mark up the bolts and washers so they go back the same or you'll have to get the tracking done , theres a full write up how to do it with pics on fullfatrr.com

thanks for that, i dont suppose you know what bush tool it was, i did have a bit of a scout around but wasnt sure which one would do the job.
i need to free up one of my adjusters ? as when i took it into quick fit for the 4 wheel align when i got it they couldnt free up one of them and broke their socket trying so one wheel was very slightly out of alignment

i am just pricing that up, the arm kits don't include the bushes on the hub so i would need those as well as the bolts and nuts so i think that would be £650 instead of £320 and a lot less hassle, or i could just change the ones that are shot at the moment which i think was around £150 for oem or £80 for britpart plus whatever the extractor costs

or i could just forget about it until after christmas but the tyres will need changing at some point so dont want to change them until the bushes are sorted

the other option would be to borrow £50k over 60 months which is just under a grand a month, which is roughly what i am paying out on this bitch at the moment, and buy a nearly new fecker....:eek:

change the lot while your there or dont bother...

it will only cost you in the end with worn tyres !

when me and my friend changed all my front bushes / control arms i didnt want to bother fiddling about trying to extract bushes so i just got the complete struts with bushes. so just had to unbolt and swap over.... thats bad enough when the nuts are siezed ! lol


dont expect a new range rover not to break lol :D

thats good advice, once (if) mine is all sorted mechanically i will then get into asking you how to make mine look like yours......:D

don't let the problems get to you, because when the cars are working, they really are brilliant ! iv learnt to keep calm when a problem occurs, nothing phases me now ! lol


aha, you like my old girl ? its a secret how she looks so good ;):p
