Hi :D

So i have a rear window, with a heated element. :rolleyes:

But it dont work! so I'm :(

And now its gonna get colder id like to make sure it does work.

Then i can be :) again.

I have metered it out, and ive got 12v between the connection coming out the door and the other connector that goes to the body. But when i flip the switch, it dosent de-mist anything.

Do the elements get worn out? would brushing the element down help? like cleaning a soldered join?

Any advice would be great. thanks
 
You could resolder the cable to window joints - also have a good look for any cracks/breaks in the element. You can get repair kit off ebay for "painting" the broken bits of element back together ;)
 
excrement gromit. will check out ebay.

So when i run my finger over the element, it feels slightly raised. do you reckon i should get a voltage from the element itself? :confused:
 
A bit of fault help:

1. start the engine and turn on the window heater - allow several mins for the element to heat up

2. Check operation by holding your hand against the glass in the heated are to feel for warmth. If the glass only warms up in certain areas the heating element may have open segments.

3. The specific heater lines that don't work may be determined by breathing on the glass to fog it.

4. Locate the open spot in the heater line by looking for a small gap/crack in the heater line. If the gap is invisible use a test light to find it. Starting at the positive side of the heater - touch the test light to the heater line at various points along the line until the light goes out - the break is between that point and the last good test point ;)
 
I've got the same problem, but prob worse. It looks as though the previous owner either had a dog that scratched on the window, or carried a load of scratchy brush. Most of the horizontal elements are broken, I only found where by using a voltmeter and moving the probes along each line until there was a voltage increase - that's the break.

I'm toying with buying a new rear window, they're only about £50 on fleabay.

Im thinking the same to be honest. mine isnt broken in any places i dont think but it has worn away a bit.

In an added twist, the audi i just bought today has the same problem. Think there has been a dog in the back as the rear glass is scratched as folk as well! :( didnt notice it dosent clear the screen very well. didnt need it until it got cold this afternoon.
 
its common for em to burn out, hence the timed relays on em these days.

mines so goosed, I bought one of them ceramic fan heater thingys from ebay, screwed it to the headlining pointing at the rear window, ran the cables down to behind the rear light, and connected it to the original rear window heater wiring.
Does a pretty good job.
 
i might try scratching it all off and using that silver paint stuff that Daz posted earlier. cant be any worse off i suppose.
