I was reading a thread a couple of weeks ago where somebody had pushed pieces of plastic bag up inside the seal to expand it in size to make the seal against the door better and cure his leak. I can't find the thread now but it got me thinking!!.

Instead of pushing pieces of plastic bag up inside what do you think of using that expanding foam stuff with a long nozzle on it. You could push the nozzel right up then give a little squirt of foam while pulling it out slowly. Once out close the door until the foam has set then repeat on the other side. What's your thoughts on this idea.

the fact that it sets hard i see as being potentialy problematic ..

besides .. the foam would expand lengthwise along the seal ..
and not so much across the profile ..

you could end up with a solid .. that don't seal ..

or seals in summer 'n leaks in winter ..

gotta feelin' it would promote a squeak or two as well :)

I don't think it set's rock hard, I believe it can be pushed in with a finger once set ???

Yes it will expand lenth ways but should also expand the profile, I can't see why it wouldn't ???

It's one of those things isn't it, do I chance it or not ???

Anymore thoughts on this.

been a while since i used the stuff ..

but i've got some here that i put between some bricks .. years ago
'n yes .. it does seem to remain slightly flexible ..

didn't check b4 i typed previous ..
for some reason i thought it would crumble
 
Perhaps there's some sort of expanding silicone that could be pumped up there just to expand the seal a bit. ???

Wonder if anybody has an old seal that they could try this out on and post the results. Just a thought.

About 15 years ago when i was still in South Africa a friend of mine had a Datsun 120y, the boot seal always leaked, so we set upon making little holes along the rubber seal every foot or so and injected silicon with surgical precision, every time a section was filled we closed the boot to create the perfect seal and then cleaned up and continued, it worked an absolute treat until about a year later the rubber completely fell apart and we were told the chemical in the silicon that sets it off was quite bad for Rubber....
 
try taping the metal that the seal fits onto towards the door a bit it would only need a fraction to helps it . just a thought

That's that Idea down the pan then. Thanks for your input.
 
Got the same problem myself, although now the carpet has been out for ages after drying, the amount that leaks in is hardly noticable, seems the carpet just holds on to it all..

I did consider feeding a length of 6mm OD pneumatic pipe down the inside of the seal to beef it up a little, Festo PUN-E is nice and soft.. but probably an arse to feed in....

When I get round to it I'll post the results... btw mine leaks in along the door seal at the same level as the wiring harness, it looks as if over the years the harness has flattened the seal a little by gently rubbing on it, allowing the water to track across it and get in..
 
cant remember if the freebie seal is similar but on my disco door seal I read on here about shoving some electric flex up the seal, remove cable cores first, lube up and slide in.
 
Expanding foam goes rock hard well the one I use for foaming in windows after fitting does anyway so I wouldn't recommend it lol

It wouldn't expand through the rubber aswel it expans to the easiest route so it would prob just expand out not through

That's the stuff my son uses, he's a UPVC window fitter as well. Ah well back to the drawing board.

I should have said he was. He started a new job last night with the railway. He used to work for R&P Pontypridd, but money was rubbish so he decided to look elsewhere. He left R&P about six months ago and went sub contracting to a maintenance company doing repairs on government buildings but work was slack before Christmas, so had no work for 4 - 5 weeks.
 
I've given my rubber seal a smear of vaseline which also softens and lubricates it up. Shiny and flexible again ;)
