For the sake of a bit of juice just jump in your car, drive over, stick the diff lock in and try it, with and without the H brake on.

Whats the worst that can happen? P

Plus, it gives you a chance to see what the spline counts are if you take it to get a new diff ;)

I think I'll do that. It's just I'm not clued up enough to know exactly what it is myself so trying to clue myself up a little bit via you lots brains :D

Was up for £1700 before, he said I could have it for £800 now, might out a cheeky offer in...

The handbrake was working before though. Would diff going break the handbrake or does it sound like transfer box?

hand brake operates on the output flange of t/box prop is directly bolted to so it cant be working if prop can be turned, putting it in diff lock or g/box in gear should if things are ok stop prop turning (though it will turn a little due to backlash but only a small part of a turn

So if it doesn't spin when either in gear or in diff lock, it's likely to be fooked diff, half shafts and handbrake at worst?

Yeah I was going to offer £500 but I'm hoping to part ex my 106 gti with his truck and money my way...

I am keen to get it though!
