I just need some confirmation on a ongoing oil leak from my rear diff pinion seal...can someone tell me which side goes towards the gearbox and which to the pinion prop side.
Is it 1. Or 2 in the pic

Pictures not that great to be honest, the side with the spring around the seal, is this gearbox side or pinion/prop side.

Any ideas why is could be leaking? Looks like it's leaking pinion to seal side and not casing to seal.... it had this problem when I bought the car 9 years ago...I changed it out for another of the brown ones and it seemed OK until just recently. ..so I've changed it again for a cheaper black all makes one..which seems to be worse than the old brown one? Have I bought crap make part?
does the seal sit flush with the casing or does it go further in?

Seems to only leak when moving when stopped no leak..

its baffling me this one?? Maybe I should buy one brown one...

If you're new seal is leaking badly, then it suggests its the wrong size to fit the shaft. Oil seals don't last forever, but two in the same diff might point to a bearing set too loose.

I'm going to have to look at it again...at least I know it's in the right way round I was starting to doubt myself...

thx
